When does a post call for law enforcement experience?

Law enforcement experience tends to matter most where people and tension meet: a crowded entrance, a high-profile guest list, a site with a history of incidents, a contentious meeting, or an event where police are likely to be called or already nearby. It also matters where the post itself is meant to be seen and to set a tone.

Many teams are mixed, pairing experienced officers with trained, licensed security officers so each post has the right person on it.

Current off-duty officers

Off-duty employment is subject to each officer’s department rules and approvals, and those rules differ from one agency to the next. We staff current officers on private assignments only where their outside work is permitted, and availability depends on their department schedules.

An off-duty officer working a private assignment acts as private security personnel, not in an official police capacity, unless a role is separately arranged through the officer’s agency. That distinction shapes how the post orders are written, what the officer is asked to do, and who is called when police action is needed. If an event or site needs an on-duty, official police presence, we coordinate it with the agency, and the detail is arranged through that agency under its own rules.

Retired officers

Retired officers bring experience without the scheduling limits of a current department, which makes them a steady fit for recurring posts, longer events, and support roles on protective details. Where an assignment is armed, personnel carry under the credentials that apply to them and to the jurisdiction, such as state security licensing or federal LEOSA qualification, as applicable.

Armed or unarmed

Whether an assignment is armed or unarmed comes from the assessment: the concern, the environment, the venue’s rules, and the client’s preference. Many posts staffed with experienced officers are unarmed by design.

Where this staffing is used

At events, off-duty and retired officers often work entrances, crowd-facing positions, and posts near high-profile guests. They can also strengthen wedding and film and TV production coverage where a guest list or a location draws attention. On executive protection details they can support advance work, arrivals, and static posts. For businesses, they can strengthen corporate security during terminations, contentious meetings, or periods of elevated concern.
