Protective intelligence work in Chicago
Protective Intelligence

Protective intelligence, grounded in counterterrorism experience.

Threat assessment and protective intelligence that find risk early and act on it.

Protective intelligence is the work of identifying, investigating, and assessing threats to a person or organization before they escalate. TB Defense applies the methods its founder used in Chicago Police counterterrorism work, assessing threats against public officials, to executives, public figures, families, and companies. We are based in Chicago and work locally, nationally, and internationally.

What protective intelligence includes

  • Threat assessment on a specific person, group, or situation
  • Investigation of concerning individuals, including stalkers and fixated persons
  • Online and social-media threat monitoring and analysis
  • Surveillance detection around a principal, residence, or office
  • Pre-event and pre-travel intelligence and advisories
  • A written assessment with prioritized, practical recommendations

How does protective intelligence work?

Protective intelligence is the difference between guarding a door and knowing who is trying to come through it. We start with the concern and the context: who or what is the worry, what has happened, and what the routine looks like. We investigate and assess the threat, judge how credible and capable it is, and recommend the protective measures that actually fit it. Intelligence drives the plan, so you spend on the real risk, not on guesswork.

Who needs protective intelligence?

Executives, public figures, and companies facing a specific threat or a person of concern, and counsel and security teams who need an independent, intelligence-led read before they act. Protective intelligence focuses on a specific person, group, or communication; for the overall exposure of a site or household, a security risk assessment is usually the better starting point.

The work is led by our founder, whose Chicago Police career includes protective intelligence investigations and threat assessments in the Counterterrorism Division; meet our leadership. Intelligence also shapes our executive protection details, event security plans, and national and international travel coverage.

Common questions

What is protective intelligence?

Protective intelligence is the proactive work of identifying, investigating, and assessing threats to a person or organization before they escalate, so protection can be built around real risk rather than assumption. It covers people of concern, online threats, surveillance around a principal, and the intelligence that goes into events and travel.

How is this different from hiring a bodyguard?

A protective detail manages risk in the moment. Protective intelligence works upstream, finding and evaluating the threat early, so any protective detail is the right size and in the right place. The two work best together: intelligence tells the executive protection detail who and what to watch for.

Can you assess a specific person who is worrying us?

Yes. Investigating and assessing a person of concern, such as a stalker, a fixated individual, or a threatening former employee, is core protective intelligence work. We judge how credible and capable the threat is and recommend protective measures that fit it, and we treat the consultation as confidential.

Do you monitor online and social-media threats?

Yes. Online and social-media threat monitoring and analysis is part of our protective intelligence work. We look for concerning posts, messages, and patterns directed at a principal, family, or company, assess what they mean, and recommend a response that fits the real level of risk.

Can you provide intelligence before an event or a trip?

Yes. Pre-event and pre-travel intelligence and advisories are part of the service, locally, nationally, and internationally. They give a principal, a host, or a security team a clear read on the setting before arrival, and they shape the plan for any event security or protective detail that follows.

The Chicago Weekend Security Brief.

The same method we use for clients, applied to the public record: briefs on what may constrain movement across the region over the weekend and the week ahead. Street closures, stadium egress, transit work, weather, aviation, CPD pattern alerts and WARN filings, with each item cited to its source.
